This August 6th and 9th is the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. SHOL PAX Christi Newton wanted a way to remember and repent of those terrible events and pray for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
So, every evening from August 1st to 9th, a group of parishioners has gathered on Zoom to pray a Novena for Nuclear Disarmament. Each evening focuses on a different theme related to nuclear weapons and disarmament, suggested by PAX Christi Maine/USA's novena. SHOL's novena, developed by Sioux Mont, the staff liaison for our PC group, incorporates the Rosary, with a particular reflection for each decade centered on that day's theme. The reflections are based on words from Archbishop John Wester, Pope Francis, Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, Mass Peace Action, and news accounts. Each day's prayer to the Mother of Christ and Queen of Peace that ends the Rosary is adapted from Pope John XXIII's Pacem in Terris. Click here to see the Novena for Nuclear Disarmament.
It is a blessing to be able to pray as a community for the conversion of our world away from the weapons of ultimate destruction to the tools of peace-building.
